Game Boy Turns 30

Tomorrow, the 21st of April 2019, marks the 30th anniversary of the launch of the original Nintendo Game Boy in Japan. The Game Boy was arguably technologically inferior to other portable handheld consoles released around that time such as the Atari Lynx and the Sega Game Gear, yet Nintendo’s Game Boy still managed to create and maintain a gigantic sales lead compared to the competition throughout it’s lifecycle. The Game Boy and it’s subsequent iterations even became something of a massive cultural phenomenon in terms of brand recognition and loyalty whose legacy lives on to this day and goes down in history as one of the top-selling dedicated gaming consoles of all time.

The Future of Playstation

Wired just published an article with comments from Playstation lead system architect Mark Cerny. PlayStation’s next-generation console ticks all those boxes, starting with an AMD chip at the heart of the device. (Warning: some alphabet soup follows.) The CPU is based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen line and contains eight cores of the company’s new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The GPU, a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family, will support ray tracing, a technique that models the travel of light to simulate complex interactions in 3D environments.

SNES HD

A user going by the name “DerKoun” has submitted a post on the /r/emulation subreddit about a mod to popular cycle-accurate Super Nintendo emulator - BSNES - which makes it possible to increase the resolution of Mode 7 graphics by 4X. essentially turning classic SNES games into HD. Mode 7 is the Super Nintendo’s built-in hardware-accelerated mathematical functions which allows for efficient rotation and scaling of sprites on the screen.
